Urine Alcohol dipstick test is a rapid, highly sensitive method to detect the presence of alcohol in urine and provide an approximation of concentration at 0.02% or greater. This test provides a preliminary result only. A more specific alternate chemical method must be used in order to obtain a confirmed analytical result. Gas chromatography (GC) is the preferred confirmatory method. Clinical consideration and professional judgment should be applied to any result, particularly when preliminary positive results are indicated.

Alcohol dipstick test provides only a preliminary result for the alcohol concentration. A secondary analytical method must be used to obtain a confirmed result. Gas chromatography (GC) is the preferred confirmatory method.

Why to test

Testing for alcohol in urine is done because it provides a non-invasive, quick, and easy way to estimate a person's blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Most ethanol is metabolized by the liver but a small amount (0.7-1.5%) is excreted unchanged in the urine. Peak concentrations in urine are reached approximately 45-60 minutes after alcohol ingestion, and ethanol may be detected in urine for approximately 24h following consumption. Urine contains alcohol that has passed from the bloodstream, making it a useful alternative to blood or breath tests, especially in situations where the person may be unconscious, uncooperative, or where a breathalyzer is not practical. This method is used for forensic, workplace, and personal safety purposes, such as determining if someone is safe to drive.
